New Follow Me v2.2

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

I've released a new version of my Follow Me HUD. It's free to all current owners.

For those who haven't seen it, Follow Me lets you teleport around the grid with your friends. Simply have everyone wear the HUD, and when one person teleports, the others will teleport with them. You don't have to send everyone a TP, it's all automatic.

It used to work by sending everyone a TP link which they could click in their chat history. It still does that, but now you can enable Auto Teleport mode, which uses the just-released TeleportAgent capability to teleport you automatically! No clicks or map popups needed.

There are a couple of caveats. It doesn't yet work with all third-party viewers. And some regions are are different "channels" (eg, Magnum) which don't yet have a working copy of the llTeleportAgent command. But I'm sure all the third-party viewers will soon release updates to take advantage of this capability, and the sims will soon have current software.

So give it a try, and let me know if you can think of any improvements.

New Follow Me v2.1

Saturday, November 21, 2009

Thanks to Kas Kwietz who found a long-standing bug in Follow Me which would sometimes cause your followers to teleport in at a slightly lower elevation. This wasn't a problem if you were teleporting at ground level but if you teleported in to the upper floor of a building your follower could miss the floor and fall to the level below.

Anyone who owns a Follow Me HUD should get an auto-upgrade notice. I had a small glitch earlier today when I put this version into the vendor but didn't upgrade the server. It all should be good to go now.

New Follow Me Update v2.0

Friday, November 20, 2009

A new version 2.0 of Follow Me is available!

This version is much more efficient than the previous version. Although version 1.9 was not horrible, it did use an avatar scanner to detect when people teleported. This could potentially add some lag to the sim, so it only checked once every few seconds to try and be nice.

This new version uses the new llHTTPRequest call, and communicates directly with the Procyon server, so no scanners are needed and it can get updates much faster. In fact, if you're following someone and they teleport several times in succession, you'll see their position update in the map window in real time!

The update is free to all Follow Me owners. Simply visit the Procyon Games store and touch the Follow Me vendor card there. [SLURL]

New Follow Me v1.9

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

A new version 1.9 of Follow Me is available!

New Features:

  • Fixed the on/off button. When you click the green ball, it will toggle off, and when it's off nobody can follow you (and you won't get TP notices)
  • Fixed the Summon button. It would only work if your follower was in a crowd. Now it's much more responsive.
  • Added Map on/off. If you don't want your map to popup every time someone teleports, you can change it to only give you a TP link in your chat history.

To upgrade, just visit Procyon Games and click on the Follow Me vendor.

Follow Me v1.8 (now mandatory)

Monday, May 5, 2008

I upgraded Follow Me to version 1.8 last week. Tomorrow I will be making the upgrade mandatory. If you are still using an older version of Follow Me, it will stop working.

One of the main reasons for the upgrade was to make the code more efficient on my server. The older versions tend to band much harder on my server, and it slows things down for all the other functions it has to perform, like keeping track of high scores.

Even if you don't upgrade before the cutoff, you can still get a new version by visiting Procyon Games and clicking the vendor there. If you've incorporated Follow Me into another item, you will need to replace the script there with the new version.

Follow Me v1.8

Friday, April 25, 2008

A new version 1.8 of Follow Me is available!

New Features:

  • Links decay after 3 hours. This will mainly help my server keep up with the load. If you're linked with someone, and they don't move for 3 hours, they will automatically unlink. Just stand next to them to automatically relink to them.

  • On/Off switch. Click the green ball and you can turn it on and off.

  • Give Gift. Lets you easily give copies to your friends without taking it off.

To upgrade, just visit Procyon Games and click on the Follow Me vendor.

New Follow Me Update v1.7

Sunday, October 14, 2007

I've just released a new update to Follow Me (version 1.7).

Follow Me is now a HUD, instead of a big green ball that floats over your head. What was I thinking? I'll tell you what I was thinking. I was thinking it would be so cool to have 20 people all TP into a sim with green balls over their head. People would look at it and wonder, what is going on here? The problem is, of course, that nobody wants to be the first person to TP in to a sim with a green ball over their head. So, it's gone.

I have removed the last vestiges of XMLRPC. Oh, XMLRPC! What promise you had! And then, what poor implementation. XMLRPC is dead. Long live HTTP.

XMLRPC was responsible for those times when you lost contact with your followers. So that should happen less frequently. As in, never.

Also a pet peeve of mine: no-script areas. You would get all set and linked up, only to discover after you TP that you've TP'd into a no-script zone and none of your followers can follow you. Well, no more. Follow Me will work just fine in no-script areas. You can TP anywhere in the grid without worry.

Finally, there is the new Track button. It lets you follow someone even if they aren't using Follow Me. It's less accurate -- it only tells you the sim, not the exact location, and you will lose the trail if they TP again before you catch up with them. Still, it should be useful in situations where someone wants to show you something real quick and they don't want to be bothered with putting on another HUD.
