Team Captains and Privacy

Saturday, September 25, 2010

There have been some requests to add the Team Captain names on the Team Rank display page. Next to each team, you would see the name of the person who owns that team, the team captain.

Obviously, some people would not want their names displayed there. So I'll need to add another privacy option, one that would let you remain anonymous.

The question is, should the name display be opt-out or opt-in?

If it's opt-out, then all team captains' names would be displayed by default. You would have to check the box in your account options to enable privacy.

If it's opt-in, then nobody's name would show up by default. You would have to uncheck the "anonymous" option in your account settings.

What do you think should be the default? Post a comment to this blog entry to let me know (or email me).

Personally, I would prefer to make it opt-out. I'm afraid if it's opt-in then most people won't enable it. There's a lot of owners who don't even know this website exists. So the names would all be blank, and it wouldn't be much different from not having the name display at all.

Hmmmmm... I am afraid I don't understand the "problem". Team captain names aren't very important for my enjoyment of En Garde. And if it IS going to be displayed, I do not see the privacy issue. If you name a team, it is something you do for the rest of the world to be able to identify you. Who would name a team and then choosing not to be associated with it? So I refrain from voting for "opt-in" or "opt-out".

When that is said - I really think it's the board owners' responsibility to keep themselves updated on what is going on. Be it through the group or your blog. If they don't, it's by default not an important issue for them.

And while I have your attention... something that IS important: the name textures that are unreadable in a number of viewers. For En Garde it's just a nuisance. For Can't Stop it's a real problem. I actually announced the wrong winner in yesterday's tournament because I guessed the wrong name! So - on behalf of the people playing on my pistes and tables, I ask you to consider if there is a way to solve this.

About the name textures...

The problem is that Second Life uses this odd and unusual format (Jpeg2000) for its textures. There's no good standard library to decode it. Each of the various third-party viewers uses a different library, and in fact there was a big kerfluffle recently about which decoder was legal to use.

So there's no way to make sure a Jpeg2000 image works in all viewers.

What I'd like is for Linden Lab to implement HTML textures. HTML is a nice common format, there's tons of good libraries to render HTML. It's something they've promised but I doubt they'll ever get their act together enough to actually implement it.

In the meantime, you can use the Local Scores feature on the website. It not only gives you everyone's name in an easy-to-read format, it will show all names, not just the top eight.

Sorry for departing from your original topic!

Just a brief comment to your suggestion to use local score on website:
1) Only game owner can see that
2) It does not show "tournament mode" i.e. the reset local scores.

And I HAVE made a JIRA to Phoenix on this topic (http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/PHOE-422), but it was said to be a duplicate of http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/PHOE-412. Phoenix users should vote for the issue......
